Another Reason for Chiropractic Care in Pregnancy
June 27, 2012

Many women have successfully utilized the service of chiropractors throughout pregnancy for the relief of back pain and discomfort commonly associated with pregnancy. Since the advent of the Webster technique, many women have started chiropractic care with a malpositioned baby and experienced its timely turning under care.

More recently, women have been seeking chiropractic care for the potential elimination of dystocia (difficult labor). Here is yet another reason how chiropractic care throughout pregnancy can help pregnant women have safer, easier births.  About 1 in 200 pregnant women suffer from preeclampsia with hypertension and albuminaria (protein in urine), which can lead to seizures, coma and death. The cause is unknown.

The authors studied pregnant women to see if there was a relationship between their spinal shape, particularly the lumbar (lower back) spinal shape and preeclampsia. It was revealed that women with decreased lumbar spine curves had more preeclampsia. Interestingly, they also found that patients with reduced lumbar curves had decreased blood flow to the iliac artery than normal pregnant women.

Chiropractic for Kids Too
June 20, 2012

Back and neck pain are not limited to adults. Children suffer from these ailments too. According to a recent study that tracked the incidence of back and neck pain from childhood to adolescence, one in ten children, age 9, suffered from neck pain and one in three suffered from back pain. The percentages dip a bit at age 13, but then climb dramatically by age 15.

Here’s what the research shows:

Percentage Reporting Neck Pain:

Age 9: 10%

Age 13: 7%

Age 15: 15%

Percentage Reporting Back Pain:

Age 9: 33%

Age 13: 28%

Age 15: 48%

As one can see by age 15, nearly one is six adolescents report neck pain and nearly one in two report back pain. These are concerning percentages and should be taken seriously. Parents can help their children by bringing them into the chiropractor the moment they report feeling any kind of pain. Parents can also help their children by bringing them into the chiropractor for a spinal evaluation before age 9. This may help prevent pain patterns from developing into adolescence and adulthood. After all, preventing pain before it starts is the secret to lasting health and wellness for both children and adults.

Chiropractic For Runners

1.)Master Runner Relies on Chiropractic Care: from the New York Times

Kathy Martin, age 60, routinely visits a chiropractor, a massage therapist, a strength coach and a physical therapist. She refers to these healers as Team Martin, and she believes they keep her aligned, stretched, kneaded, restored and stimulated.

One afternoon last month, Jon DiFlorio, the strength coach, had Martin doing deep knee bends as Kathy held 88 pounds of weight in her hands.  “Most people her age are happy to focus on anti aging; they just want to keep playing golf or tennis into there 70’s or 80’s”, he said. “That’s not Kathy’s agenda. Kathy is an elite athlete. She’s focused on world records.”

Dr. Rick Statler, Martin’s chiropractor the past 25 years, said: “The key with Kathy is to keep her pelvis balanced. Like most runners, her tendency is to drift out of alignment. Running is hard. The body absorbs thousands of impacts. It’s like a plane. It has to fly perfectly level.”

2.)Runner Relied on Chiropractic Care for Back Pain: from Yahoo Sports

In April 2010, William H. Sloan had just completed his 14th half marathon and had lost 50 pounds. Unfortunately instead of feeling strong and healthy, Sloan’s back hurt so much that he decided to stop racing.

In his racing group there was a chiropractor whom he had met a few times yet was reluctant to try chiropractic for the pain.  A year went by, he gained back half his weight and then attended a lecture given by the same chiropractor. The information he learned is why William began going for care.

The chiropractor adjusted Mr. Sloan’s back as well as talked with him about good nutrition and posture.  After a couple of weeks, William had more energy, could sit comfortably at his desk and was ready to run again.

William Sloan attributes his second full marathon finish in December of 2011 to chiropractic care, and has a full racing schedule planned.

Leg Length Discrepancy
June 6, 2012

Have you ever wondered why your chiropractor checks the lengths of your legs?  Did you know that when some people get their pants hemmed one leg is a different length than the other?  This video will explain why there can be a discrepancy in leg length, four common ways one compensates for this and what can be done to help.

I must apologize in advance if my outfit offends anyone; I already received one complaint.  These tops were given to me as a gift and I was so excited to wear them without any awareness of my being preceived as inappropriate.
